halloween starts this saturday!

you know that halloween starts this week, right? it does. just because the holiday culminates on the 31st with the ceremonious trick or treating, you should not forget to celebrate such an important holiday in it’s entirety. did you know that halloween is an ancient celtic week long celebration that involved cupcakes instead of pumpkins? mmm hmm. true.*

for seven nights, the ancient druids of what is now known as ireland, would celebrate the end of the harvest by baking cupcakes and giving them to other druid villagers. the week long celebration included activities that were far from scary. there was the three legged race, bobbing for cupakes, weenie roasts and river dance competitions. in fact, the spooky factor came years later when during one halloween week event, a druid ate so many cupcakes, he was said to have gone mad. it is not known if it was the sugar overload or if it had been decorated with an hallucinogenic mushroom (this was before the invention of the sprinkle), but this druid, called gary the druid, ran wild through the streets (although they weren’t really “streets”). gary the druid scared the frosting out of people as he shouted things like “im scary! i see ghosts and goblins! i have pumpkins in my pants!” he was just really creepy.

the tradition became a week long reenactment of the horrific scene caused by gary (pronounced gair-ee). some would dress as ghosts or goblins, others would dress as gary the crazy druid. eventually celebrators costumed themselves as druid celebrities and political figures. just like today. only not so druidy. and it’s just for one night, not 7.

the magic pretzel trick

here in the saint cupcake office, jami makes sure we are well stocked with snacks. from licorice whips to mini twix bars to cheese balls! to kettle chips to hummus to pretzels, she makes sure we should not want for anything crunchy. if she thinks this means we’ll keep our paws off her cupcakes, she is sorely mistaken. but it does keep us full all day. anyway, the last time i reached in the pretzel bag, this happened. seemingly suspended in mid-air, this was the first time a pretzel left me speechless. well, this and when i heard that the president saved his own life after nearly choking on one.

whether you’re fasting for yom kippur, have already started to deep clean your turkey baster or have begun to untangle those icicle lights that you took down in march, you know it’s time to think about (and when i say ‘think about’ i mean you will be bombarded with) the holidays. next up: halloween. my favorite.

in my house, i know that my husband will, in the next few days mind you, bring home probably 3 bags of “halloween” candy.  almond joy’s got nuts. so does baby ruth. as do peanut m&ms. we won’t have 3 bags worth of trick or treaters; although our neighborhood is filled with kids, we won’t be home during primetime trick or treating because we will be out ourselves with princess ellery. he knows this and will buy said candy anyway. we’ll eat it all before the sun goes down on halloween. that’s a lot of candy for two people. (and i say two because we will hide the candy from the kid. although she has attempted to pry my mouth open when i’ve popped in a piece of chocolate that she can smell. the kid has a lupine sense of candy detection) it’s not that i am a candy FIEND or anything but as with most people, if it is in the house, i’ll eat it. this year i am not looking for any extra sugar/calories/bellyaches/vices. if you’re like me, and don’t really (but yeah, you really do) want that candy around, than have i got a deal for you.

quick related story, while we are on the topic of halloween:
once, when i was a kid trick or treating, my friends and i happened upon steve perry’s house where instead of candy, he was handing out oh sherry! singles. that was cool, but it was no cupcake.
