we sure love the kind folks at the nw children’s theater. they’re real great neighbors, put on fantastic productions, plus they serve up our cupcakes at the concession stand on friday nights and for some special events. not only THAT, but they’ve given us some complimentary tickets to share with you. and they can write the best thank you note in the history of thank you notes. well, thank YOU nw children’s theater.
as a way of passing on the thanks to you, cupcake eater, we want to give you a comp pass (good for two people!) for the upcoming musical production of alice in wonderland! show starts friday, january 23rd and runs through february 15th. just come on in to our nw store, buy an undisclosed amount of cupcakes, flash your best cheshire cat grin and ask us about the tickets. while supplies last, though. because if we had no more, we’d have no more.
the real neil: a true effing story
POSTED ON Friday, January 16, 2009 AT 14:31 by saint cupcake
last week, as a belated birthday gift to this blog writer (i share my birthday with jimmy buffet and jesus, fyi) my mom took me to see neil diamond. no one loves classically awesome love songs more than this girl, so what a super treat that was! not to mention when i was in the 3rd grade, i was picked to be on the five kid drill team that did a dance number to “america” complete with red, white and blue streamers tied to our wrists. to this day i can’t sit still when i hear that anthem. anyhoo, back to the story i have been meaning to tell you all week. man, i love the jazz singer.
so as you might imagine, neil doesn’t attract the rowdiest mob in the world, but you can bet your sweet caroline that when a crowd pleaser like that is played, everyone gets on their feet. albeit slowly, by the time neil got to “i can’t begin to knowing,” everyone was standing at the rose garden arena. that is everyone but the very old, very angry man in a very pink blazer behind my mom. so seriously, this was the first verse of the first song that got people standing and “dancing” at the arena and out of what seemed to be NOWHERES, this sitting man is reaching over and hitting my mom on her back (thank goodness she was wearing her fluffy red chenille heart sweater) and screaming, “SIT THE EFF DOWN! EFF YOU! MOTHER EFFERS!” mom and i sat down immediately, and we were surrounded by a butt fortress. in the shadows of asses, my mom and i looked at each other, stunned. “did that just happen?” i asked. then we both burst out laughing, but i was scared to turn around. after a few seconds, my mom stood up and was tugging at my shirt and insisting that i “stand the ef up and effing dance, jennifer!”
knowing that there was a potentially violent octogenarian with a potty mouth behind me was enough to keep me in my seat, but the fact that he became so enraged because he couldn’t physically SEE neil diamond singing “sweet caroline” really tickled me. this guy LOVES neil and probably more than i. so as i was sitting there, still surrounded by asses, i felt like i was doing a really nice thing by letting this guy see neil. then i got mad at myself for rewarding his bad behavior. then i turned around, sort of as a way to let mr. thurston howell the third thank me for being such a nice young lady, but when i did, i saw that man, still angry and GLARING at me. i don’t know where it came from, but something more powerful than myself took over and i asked him “why the eff he was staring at me, and couldn’t he see effing neil?” and he said “yes”, he “could see as long as i was sitting the eff down” and i said “i AM sitting the eff down, aren’t you happy now” and his wife chimed in and told me to “shut the eff up.” so i did. but then i stood up pretending not to wonder what was going to happen next. nothing did. mom and i enjoyed neil and “let the music just wash over” us like neil told us. (yeah, neil really said that).
what does this have to do with cupcakes? just wait. i’ll get there.
when the show was over, our neighbors all around us in section A116 rows N & M (you know who you are!) patted our backs and offered consolations and well wishes. one lady said she hoped that that man didn’t ” ruin my neil diamond experience,” was she kidding? i had an eff you war with a elderly man. i just got a great story to tell!
now for the cupcake tie in: remember our singing valentine’s day telegrams? well we are offering them again this year and sweet -“insert-recipient’s-name-here” is still on the list of songs that crooner and saint cupcake co-owner henry curl (matt’s stage name is henry) will do. for $30, he’ll show up at the work place of the object of your affections with your cupcake order (minimum $15) and serenade with one of several awesome songs. check back next week for more details AND hear about our other v-day specials.
and by the way, if you can produce a ticket stub for that rose garden neil diamond show from section A116, row M or N seats 4-10, we’ll give you a free cupcake. you can even sit the eff down to eat it! especially you in the pink blazer.
this is a picture of neil looking at the man in the very pink blazer.

leora, it’s your lucky year!
POSTED ON Friday, January 02, 2009 AT 11:35 by saint cupcake
this is leora:

isn’t she lovely? isn’t she lucky!?
leora was picked from our vat of names to receive a free cupcake everyday for a year for our special birthday drawing. that means every time she comes in, we’ll probably shout her name like she’s norm peterson (only we won’t call her norm, unless she wants us to) and give her whatever cupcake her heart desires. leora’s been real busy with her first year of law school, but we are real excited that she will be spending some time with us here at saint cupcake. we look forward to seeing her everysinglesolitaryday. (that we’re open, of course)
congrats, leora! see you everyday!
oh, and if you happen to see leora, try and treat her like a regular person. i’m sure she doesn’t want everyone fussing over her and making a big deal about her celeb status.
